BIOLOGY

Careers Biology graduates have successfully pursued many different career paths ranging from medicine to law. Popular professions for biology majors include physician, dentist, optometrist, veterinarians, medical technologist, biomedical technician, pharmaceutical salesperson, entrepreneur, wildlife and natural resource manager, and professor. Many graduates also pursue careers in federal and state agencies like the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Environmental Protection Agency, and Centers for Disease Control. CHEMISTRY

The University of Utah’s Department of Chemistry is known nationally for excellence in education and research. Students receive a world-class education that forms the foundation for success in a wide range of in-demand careers. Careers A degree in chemistry opens career opportunities in academics, industry, government, and the military. Popular career paths include the fields of academics, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and medicine. Chemistry graduates consistently gain admission to top chemistry, biochemistry, and medical graduate schools, as well as JD and MBA programs. Graduates have also worked in federal agencies like NASA, the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Notable Accomplishments Chemistry faculty are frequently honored with national and international awards, including the National Medal of Science and the Willard Gibbs Medal. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Emphases Mathematics of Computation Statistics Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Teaching Undergraduate Minor Mathematics Mathematics Teaching Mathematics is basic to science, engineering, and any analytic endeavor. Mathematicians often work as part of a team of scientists and engineers who conduct research, solve problems, or develop products and systems in technology, industry, finance, or business.

MATHEMATICS

Careers Mathematics degrees open up a wide variety of professional opportunities. Typical careers in the field include actuary, statistician, data scientist, operations researcher, software developer, financial analyst, secondary school teacher, professor, data analyst, cryptologist and research scientist. In addition, mathematicians occupy many administrative positions in finance and accounting departments where computers, statistics, and analytical thinking play an important role. A mathematics degree also provides a strong background for those will pursue medicine or law. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Physics Emphases Astronomy & Astrophysics Applied Physics Biomedical Physics Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Physics Teaching Undergraduate Minor Astronomy Physics Physics Teaching Physics and astronomy are two of the most innovative and adaptable fields of science because of their emphasis on analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Faculty includes leading researchers in astronomy, relativity & cosmology, biophysics, cosmic rays, physics education, particle physics, and condensed matter physics.

Careers Physics degrees provide opportunities to enter careers in research, education, industry, government, and military service. Many graduates go on to graduate school, medical school, or law school before entering professions like academia, engineering, medicine, dentistry, business and national defense. Notable Accomplishments The award-winning faculty are well known in their fields for their research. Faculty members are also involved in leadership of several large-scale endeavors, including the SLOAN Digital Sky Survey.

The College of Science is committed to providing students with experiences that foster success. Student Community Throughout the academic year, the College of Science hosts events and activities that bring the student community together for an undergraduate experience that extends beyond the classroom. Activities run the gamut, including science fiction film nights, live music socials, yoga, games, and star parties at the campus observatory. Students will find new friends and plenty of free food to fill their days.

Research Opportunities Science students at the University of Utah learn from faculty who are experts in their field. Beyond the classroom, undergraduate students have a plethora of opportunities to engage in research, and share their discoveries in a campus symposium, or even publish before graduating. College of Science Clubs Students can further explore their scientific interests, engage in community outreach, or participate in career and professional development workshops by participating in one of the many College of Science Clubs and networking experiences.


Undergraduate Academic Advising Academic advisors are here to help you connect with university resources and opportunities so that you can maximize your undergraduate experience. We will assist you in exploring and declaring a major or minor, work with you to create an academic plan, and ensure that you understand graduation requirements such as general education, bachelor degree requirements, and course prerequisites. We are here to help you navigate the U of U from admission to graduation, and everything in between. Visit the College of Science Academic Advisors in the Advising Hive at the Crocker Science Center room 240. The Advising Hive is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. ACCESS Established in 1991, ACCESS provides women a supportive path into the sciences and engineering by offering a scholarship award, learning experience, and networking that fosters academic success throughout their undergraduate education. In addition, students explore science and engineering through a multidisciplinary, ACCESS-exclusive, summer course and by actively engaging in research.
